Welcome Back! Thank you to all the parents that attended the virtual parent meeting. This year our program will be virtual. We will be using Pflaum Gospel Weeklies Faith Formation Program and Flipgrid. Assignments will be assigned through Flipgrid and our website. Virtual meetings for parents and/or children will be implemented through Google Meet.
Pflaum Gospel Weeklies Faith Formation Program revolves around the Sunday Gospel. The program consists of a publication for each Sunday and “catechism handbook” called What the Church Believes and Teaches. This handbook contains all the doctrinal elements that are considered essential at each grade level. This Saturday, September 26th between 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM you may pick up your child’s package. Outside the front of church. You will receive the publications for the Sundays starting with September 20 - November 8th (Ordinary Time). I had hoped to start last week but the publications did not arrive in time. As we get closer to Advent you will get another packet of lessons. The Gospel Weeklies has an online component which will help you through the Sunday lessons. The fee for each child is $50.00 and I ask if you could make the payment on Saturday. Please put payment in an envelope with your child(ren) name(s). Cash or check made payable to St. Jude.
What does a weekly lesson look like?
When you open up the Sunday publication you will see a four page magazine for Seeds, Promise and Good News publications. If you have an older child they will have an 8 page magazine (Venture & Visions).
What do you and your child need to do each week?
Each week you and your child in the younger grades should read through the magazine. The students in the older grades will need to do a little more reading. Lessons will be spelled out on the website and Flipgrid.
What is Flipgrid?
Flipgrid is a social learning platform that allows educators to ask a question, then the students respond in a video. Students are then able to respond to one another. Children’s videos will first be reviewed by me before I allow them to be seen by others.
After each lesson a question or two will be asked. Students and/or families are to answer the question. Once posted others will be able to respond. (Again I will be monitoring all postings. Also, our Flipgrid will be private and only members with a password will be able to post and review.
You will receive two additional emails with sign-on information.
Sunday Mass: I do expect that all children attend Sunday Mass, in person or online. There will be more information about that on our website. http://www.shrinechurchofsaintjude.org
ChildLures: The Diocese of Brooklyn mandates that every year every child in the diocese is presented with the ChildLures workshop in person. This year is no exception, therefore I will be having two virtual/live meetings for the children. One meeting will be for grades 1- 4 and the other will be for grades 5+. I will be sending out an email just about Child Lures to find a date and time which would be best for the children to be online virtually, I will be using GoogleMeet.
Sacrament preparation will be discussed in another meeting. Sacrament preparation for all the sacraments will be separate from the Sunday obligations.
I apologize for such a long letter but there was so much that needed to be addressed.
Greetings: My name is Helen Teifer and I am the Religious Education Administrator for the Shrine Church of St. Jude. On this page you will find information about formal Religious Education for children. Currently Shrine Church of St. Jude Religious Education is for children in Grades 1 - 8.

Finally, there will be previous letters that I have published.

Sunday Gospel Reading for Children
CHILDREN'S FORMAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION INFORMATION *
* Catholic parents who wish to have their children receive the sacraments are required to send their children to formal religious education yearly starting with the first grade.
* All children are expected to attend Sunday Mass. Unfortunately, times have changed. If you are uncomfortable bringing your child to Mass on Sundays during the pandemic the best alternative is to watch the Mass online. There are many options. Shrine Church of St. Jude's Sunday Mass is live streamed on Facebook every Saturday evening. Under resources you may view a Children's Mass from CatholicFoundation.sg.
* Two complete years are required before the reception of the sacrament of
First Holy Communion.
* Confirmation - Students must be in at least 8th Grade and have had 2 years
of formal Religious Education (Catholic school or Religious Ed) to be eligible to
receive this sacrament. Confirmation Class for 2020/2021 school year will begin
in October. (Date and how will be determined at a later date.)
* Shrine Church of St. Jude Religious Education for Levels 1 - 8 for the beginning of 2020/2021 school year will be meeting on-line through emails, Flipgrid and Microsoft Team.
* Shrine Church of St. Jude Religious Education will use Pflaum Gospel Weeklies. This program centers around the Sunday Gospel. Parents will be asked to assist
their children with the Sunday lessons.
* A catechist or the DRE will be assigned to each family to assist you in this journey.
August 1, 2020
Dear Parents and Guardians:
I hope all is well! In my June letter I stated that our Sunday Religious Education program would look different for the upcoming school year 2020-2021. It is now August and September is right around the corner. Each day I review the impact and future impact of COVID-19 on our school systems. Each day I wonder how the Shrine Church of St. Jude can offer a Religious Education program to our children to educate them in our Faith in a safe manner.
Given the uncertainty of the times, a blended learning model for religious education has been approved by the Diocese of Brooklyn. This model allows religious education to be done in both an in-class or at-home setting depending on the circumstances. As we move with precautions and based on authoritative data from the state and recommending guidelines from the diocese, the Shrine Church of St. Jude Religious education program will begin with the at-home model. This model addresses the fact that parents/guardians are the primary educator and formator of their children in the Faith and the parish is here to assist, aid and guide.
You might have wondered why I have chosen to go this route. My primary concern is the safety of all. The church building is open for Masses at 25% which allows a total of 50 people. A little more if we have a large family. Currently, our Masses are almost up to capacity. Also, the school hall is set-up for overflow. The school hall holds 63. The enrollment of a typical Sunday for religious education is about 75 students. Therefore, I hope you realize I would not be able to bring the children to Mass in a group. That is one issue. Another is the bathrooms. Bathrooms are not available. Finally classrooms, children need to be 6 feet apart at all times and classrooms would need to be sanitized at the end of the lessons.
So, at least for the first half of the school year the children will be participating in on-line instruction. We will be using Pflaum Gospel Weeklies (both on-line and hard copies). Pflaum Gospel Weeklies Faith Formation Program combines a complete doctrinal catechesis with the liturgical life of the Church. To complete the on-line process I am looking into Microsoft Teams, GoogleMeet and Fipgrid.
Religious Education is ongoing. It may look different this year but the requirements are the same. Catholic children who do not attend a Catholic school are still obligated to attend Religious Education. For any child to receive the sacraments of Penance, First Holy Communion or Confirmation he/she must attend class two years prior to the reception. Skipping a year is not acceptable.
Registration will be a little easier this year. If your child was in Shrine Church of St. Jude Religious Education program last year and you have a active email address you will be receiving an email by August 8th. If you do not have an active email address or are new, please click above for "Registration" and complete the form. The cost of registration this year will be $50 for each child in our program. Registration fee will be due in September when supplies are handed out. It is important that you verify ASAP.
Remember! This pandemic will not last forever. We are here to help you educate and form your children in the beautiful faith, so that they may know God’s grace and comfort during these stressful times. We are trying out a new way to learn and there will be challenges along the way. We ask for your patience and prayers and look forward to a time when we can safely gather once more!
